Packed and waiting at Milano hotel reception.

Train to Olten CH leaves in about 40 minutes.

These coffee artists are laughing all the way over the world. Angel & Andrew Saur have used a thick brew coffee as their medium to create iconic pieces of coffee artwork. They attended HOST as guests of the organisers.

Prices for original pieces start at EUR500.

More details can be found on their website at www.coffeeart.com

What to do with a Jumbo cowling.

The airline buffs out there may recognise this Bowing 747 engine inlet cowling.

Having finished flying service, the cowling has been cut down and polished to form a reception desk.

A very impressive piece of work.

Making art from old bicycles.

More Ducth than Italian, Erika Calesini has created a place for herself in the market by turning old pushbikes into works of art.

At the HOST show they have a large section devoted to hotel and spa trends. Erika's work was being displayed in the hotels section.

Maybe this driver has been parked too long.

Adjacent to the Milano Centrale rail station we stumbled across this car parked.

Very much abandoned sometime ago it now seems to be a favourite spot for pidgeons to relieve themselves.

One good thing, they don't have any parking tickets.

Found this guy enjoying his margarine sculpting.

I think this is a pretty good likeness of his model.

In this display area they also had a chef modeling chocolate.  The chocolate of course was more poplar.

Close by they had the pizza and pasta baking demonstration.  Needless to  say these demonstration are very popular around midday.

This special picture from the Lourve. Taken with the 'landscape' mode on the Pentax.

The camera stictched together the three octures in the Venus gallery.  So much beauty, so little time.

24 October 2009

Foggy morning in MIlano. Heading out for coffee and breakfast.

Then off to HOST tradeshow.

Did half of Paris today, Arc, Eiffel,

Notre Dame, Latin Qtr, etc etc etc. Time for bed.

Amsterdam street repair lasting 4 months.

Surprised to see that the road works are left like this at the end of
the day. Easy to fall in. Esp for some of people whom are worse for it.

Fire in a street bin in Amsterdam yesterday afternoon.

Hotel view, close to Station North.

Fast train to Paris

An early start this morning had us on the TGV to Paris for a 6:26am departure.  The train goes at a moderate speed with stops at the major Dutch cities and then onto Brussels.

Once we left the Belgian capital, the train started to hit top speed.  Using the free onboard wi-fi we were able to check our location and speed.  Top speed on this trip was 300km/hr.  The iphone GPS couldn't keep up.

Speaking with a local Ducth bubsiessman it is faster for him to catch the train from Amsterdam to Paris.  When he considers the time to travel to the airport and then commute to inner Paris, it is 1 hour fast by train.

Our 4 hours train journey today cost EUR115.

At 300km/hr, no security checks and wi-fi all the way - it makes sense.

Had a E1 coffee described as best coffee in town.

During our time changing trains at  Dordrecht station this morning we were attracted by a sign offering EURO 1 best coffee in town.  So for about AUD1.60 we could have the best coffee.  In this case they had installed a coin operated fully automatic coffee machine.  No queues, no waiting, just put in the euros and walk away with the coffee.  Very efficient.

A day of public transport in Netherlands

Today was the first day of our official meetings with one of our suppliers based here in Netherlands. We set the alarms for 6:30.

First email I checked for the day was that message from Easyjet advising of the French baggage handlers strike at Orly airport this week. It will have a direct impact on our flight. Will keep everyone update don how that pans out. The wording on the official airline announcements provides guidance as to what we can reschedule and be reimburse by the travel insurance. In any case, we'll still get to enjoy Paris and maybe get to be there more than originally planned.

By the time we left the hotel it was 8:30 and grabbed croissant and coffee at Centraal Station. The whole transaction of entering the shop, ordering coffee and leaving with my purchases took less than 60 seconds. Why are Australian's in Brisbane queueing up for coffee?

We had a one hour train ride to the supplier's office. During the day we toured their factory and viewed their current and some pre-release products.

Finished the day with a drink and dinner overlooking the North Zee. Dismal looking see but still plenty of people enjoying the beach.

Well it is time for bed. Another fun day in paradise awaits for us on Wednesday.

24 hours in SIngapore doesn't give much time to explore 700 sq km.

SINGAPORE AIRPORT: Just 24 hours ago we touched down in this island state. How much can we fit into our time.

This morning we had planned to meet Phil, an ex-Osborne Computers' colleague now living and working in Singapore. Phil suggested that the Yum Cha resaurant in CHinatown did an excellent breakfast and we weren't dissappointed. Choosing from the trolleys of dim sum that were wheeled past the table we managed to graze on almost anything from spring rolls, crab claw and prawn noodle. Certainly a complete breakfast. This picture shows Graham doing the hard yards.

After breakfast we spent an hour meandering through the alleys and markets of Chinatown. Next we were onto the MRT and heading to LIttle India. It is amazing how 3 stations on the NE line can make such a cultural change. We spent another how walking the streets and market atmosphere while winding our way towards the Mustafa Centre.

Mustafa - 4 flours, trading 24 hours a day and they do sell everything. I mean everything. If you need it, I am certain that you will find it at Mustafa. We also changed money at this centre which has the bext exchange rate for SGD:AUD (1.26) that we have seen on this trip.

By mid afternoon in Little India it was time for food and drink. Once again I found my favourite Indian kitchen located on Serangoon Road and we were soon enjoying Lamb Masala & rice for S$3. Such is life.

We headed to Harbour Front and caught the free shuttle bus to the Marina Barrage. The Barrage is the recently completed barrage for achieveing three aims. a)controlling he water level in the Singapore water system b) providing drinking water for the island state and c) a lifestyle development.

Graham headed to ride the Singapore Flyer, Singapore version of the tourist ferris wheel. I headed back to the hotel for some time in the gym and swimming pool.

Well it is time for me to scurry off to the security controls for our flight to Amsterdam. Have a nice day.

Enjoying local asian cusine.

SINGPORE: Graham enjoying the breakfast dim sum spread.

Last coffee on the landside at Brisbane airport. Aromas long black
$3.50.

My travel buddy Graham opted for the Big Rooster burger and coke. Such
Aussies.

Finally time to pack the suitcase.

As much fun as it is leaving packing to the last minute, it is now packing crunch time.

Everything is in-place, passport, shirts, socks, jeans, suits, jacket, toiletries.  Work gear all set, laptop, business notes, appointments.

iPhone charger, very important to remember that critical success factor.

Oops. Just one more trip to the office to pickup - business cards.

Swine Flu

BRISBANE: Swine flu mania may have slipped off the radar in Brisbane
but for the European winter the risks are increasing.
I lined up at my local GP this morning for my swine flu vaccine. In
my case, no side effects, no pain and another step ready towards
departure.

European influence.

Indooroopilly Shoppingtown for a Sat afternoon coffee.

Final day off before departure

With just one week to go before departure for Europe there should be plenty of time, right? Wrong. Today is the last day of free time to do those last minute preparations - check for padlocks, neck pillows, eye shades for the flight, and of course, technology. Managed to 'hack' a new battery into our Skype phone - that was fun and bad marks for Netgear support. We used a Canon NB-6L batter and some masking tape.

Now to organise on-the-road technology. This year I am once again using Blogger for the travel news. A few new features have been implemented at Blogger and I have included those onto the implementation this year. Subject to availability of Wi-fi access when we are travelling I plan to be posting from the iPhone to Blogger. From Blogger I will also be updating Twitter and Facebook. Did I mention Picasa for managing the photos and thumbnails?

For mobile telecoms this year I am using a Backchat SIM when on the ground in Europe. Calls are reasonably priced. Data roaming is exhortation.

We have 6 of us from around Australia travelling this year.  TO manage our various itineraries I have everything loaded into TripIt which extends onto iPhone.  You can also keep track of progress via he Trip gadget into the lefthand column.

Now, to go and prepare for EO Forum tomorrow & Monday.

Looking forward to the real Paris.
